On Thursday 27th September Rachel met up with Arnie Kinbrum at the TIC’s Creative Networks event on ‘Commissioning for Broadcast’. Arnie was speaking alongside radio producer Neil Gardner, and invited Rachel to join him in answering the Q&A, to add her perspective on the climate for start-up Indies.

Rachel was pleased to meet up with Arnie again and return a favour by helping him out, after he’d previously provided advice to the company when they were starting out and making their first contacts.

We are now back from our extremely action packed weekend at the Media Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival. The experience has been invaluable, and great fun. We have engaged with the debates happening around the industry at the moment, made contacts with broadcasters and with other Independents, and met some great up and coming talent.

Rachel and Steven were interviewed on News 24 with Nick Hyan on Sunday afternoon, who asked about how we found the festival and what our plans are. We felt this TV debut went very well although it was very nerve-wracking – the shortest 4 minutes of our lives! Framework Television’s Development Researcher Niki also made a stage debut at the TVYP session, making it down to the last two in a game to test how well the industry understands young people and the way they consume television and new media.

Rachel was also interviewed by phone for Annie Othen’s BBC Coventry and Warwickshire radio show on Wednesday 22nd August. We’ve now managed to cover all media, as Rachel also wrote a diary blog of Framework’s time at the festival for the Broadcast website (www.broadcastnow.co.uk)! Each day’s entry is now available to view, and the blog will also form the basis of a feature in the next edition of the Broadcast magazine.

Fresh faces at Festival from Framework

A Midlands TV production company staffed by some of the youngest talent in the business is on the trail of success at the Media Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival.

The staff at Framework Television, which launched in January this year, have an average age of just 23.

The Warwick based team are already in talks with Channel 4 and have a series of projects already in development funded by a Screen West Midlands grant.

But now they are taking their ideas to the Edinburgh International Television Festival, competing with some of the biggest television production companies in the business.

Framework Television managing director Rachel Carter said the company, which also has a base in Birmingham, was very excited about the festival, which runs from August 24-26.

“The Edinburgh TV festival is a fantastic opportunity to meet some of the most influential people in television and for us to showcase our ideas,” she said.

“Framework Television may be a new and very young company with all our staff under the age of 26 but we are confident that we have the business acumen to enter the creative industry, and the skills and imagination to create fantastic, engaging and informative television.”

Framework Television was born out of Fullrange Media, a corporate video production company started by a group of graduates from the University of Warwick.

The company is already working on a drama pilot, an animated sitcom and a range of factual programme ideas, and has built relationships with a number of highly regarded directors, writers, and executive producers.

“Starting an independent television production company with no track record in the industry may seem an audacious move,” said Rachel.

“But through our relationship with Fullrange Media, we have the technical capacity and skills to deliver our programmes.

“And our success in gaining funding from Screen West Midlands and our initial talks with Channel 4 demonstrate we have the quality ideas broadcasters are looking for.”
